Feminist Dialogues: midia X fundamentalism

segunda-feira 2 de fevereiro de 2009, por Maru Chavez,

All forms of fundamentalisms, especially religious fundamentalism are present in the channel of communication in Latin America.

At the World Social Forum 2009 in Belem Alicia Stumpfs of Radio New City in Paraguay and representative of Articulacion Feminista Marcosur spoke about the importance of community media for the feminist movement in a panel, “Fundamentalisms in Media and Communications.”

Stumpfs mentioned that the affiliations of the media to groups from the conservative sectors, such as the churches have resulted to serious attacks on women’s rights in the mass media.

Paraguay is fortunate though to have an environment that recognises community media in its media legislations.

“Feminists say over and over again, ’we understand the importance of the media and that our issues need to be present in the media.’ But at the same time it is important that the democratisation of the media is also part of the feminist agenda and that community media are strengthened,” remarked Stumpfs.
